The Victorian age was a time of great change. It saw the acceleration of science and technology, and the generation of inconceivable wealth, go hand in hand with intollerable poverty and social and moral changes that echo down the ages to the present day. It was a time when heroes were thrust into the limelight by a press and public eager for anything that would ease the chaos that threatened to overwhelm an increasingly complex and incomprehensible world.
